The Seneca Lake Monster is a large, possibly prehistoric, unknown species of marine animal purported to exist in New York State’s Seneca Lake.
The native people of the region believed that a mythical serpent lived under the surface of Seneca Lake. Sightings of the creature have been reported from the late 1800s through recent years.
There have been a handful of known hoaxes of the creature, and a number of the sightings could likely be explained by either misidentification of known animals or by alleged witnesses who simply made up their stories.
However, many sightings remain unexplained, and there is a variety of both prehistoric and existing species that may account for sightings of the creature. A list of these species will be posted in this section soon.
